There was a time in my life when the only butter I ate was actually margarine; the only sugars I ate were artificial sweetener; I gave up certain foods since they were “bad” for me. Like bread, and potatoes (I LOVE potatoes). My roommate at the time came home one day with butter, and sugar, and potatoes and I started telling him all about how “bad” they were for him. He just looked at me and said, “Yeah, but they’re real food.” End of discussion, nothing else needed. It took a while for that to sink in, but I thought about it periodically and the idea started to make more and more sense to me. Why would I eat food that wasn’t real? So, I made it my goal to eat real food. But of course, one goal is too easy, so why not add a few more? Like, to eat real food, with as much made from scratch as I can, and spend as little money as possible doing it. And of course, to make it delicious.
